Questions & answers

Here is your chance to have a look at some of the many questions our surgeons have been asked recently. Although this does not replace a consultation with your own surgeon, it may help to answer a few of your concerns.

If your question hasn’t been answered here simply use the button below to send it to us and we will endeavour to include it in the near future. Alternatively you can contact us so that we can discuss your queries with you directly.

Ask your question
Can Botox stop me from clenching my teeth?

Clenching of the teeth or ‘bruxism’ is a habitual condition which usually affects people at night resulting in them clenching their jaws or even grinding their teeth. The cause is not entirely clear, but it appears to be the result of overactivity of the jaw muscles. Botox works by ‘relaxing’ these muscles and early trials have shown that it can be effective in ‘bruxism’. Small doses of botox are injected into the jaw muscles and after a few days the muscle relaxes and the ‘teeth clenching’ eases. The effect wears off after 3-4 months and requires repeat treatment.

Have you ever been invited to a Botox (Botulinum toxin) party?

Botulinum toxin is one of the most powerful neurotoxins known to man. Neurotoxins block the signal passing from a nerve to a muscle, leading to paralysis. When used correctly it is a very useful cosmetic treatment, reducing wrinkles and frown lines. However, as you can imagine with something as powerful as this, it is not safe to give to some people and when used incorrectly the consequences can be devastating.

The recent increase in Botulinum toxin (Botox) parties at home has resulted in a flurry of dissatisfied patients coming through my door. In such an environment problems arise for a variety of reasons: there is peer pressure to agree to treatment; there is no time to consider the pros and cons fully; an individual assessment is usually not made of patient suitability to treatment; it is difficult to establish the experience or qualifications of the person administering the treatment; cleanliness and sterility may be an issue as the environment is not a clinical one; there is usually no post-treatment care.

All these factors increase the risk of problems occurring, a poor result and dissatisfaction. Before agreeing to any cosmetic treatment, no matter how easy and safe it may seem, it is essential that you have the opportunity for a full discussion with your surgeon, who should assess you properly and provide the treatment in a suitable environment. Only by doing so can you ensure that you receive appropriate, high quality care.

Remember! Don’t succumb to peer pressure! It’s your body and your responsibility to look after it well. Make sure you are receiving the right treatment, by a suitably qualified doctor, in a safe environment.

Can I have BOTOX™ and fillers at the same time?

You can inject BOTOX™and filler at the same time in the same place, but they are usually injected into different planes of the tissue. Even though they are injected into the same areas of your face, one is injected into the muscle and one may be injected under the skin or in the skin.

I’ve been told that BOTOX™ treatments are priced by area, so how many areas will I need treated?

BOTOX™ is a trademark name describing botulinum toxin and there are other names of this product available such as Vistabel™ and Dysport™. Before you have a treatment you should have a consultation with your surgeon or their nurse practitioner. They will discuss how many areas you need treated. Some patient have just one area, others have multiple areas treated.

I suffer from excessive sweating, I’ve heard that BOTOX™ can help with this, is this true?

Yes this is true. The condition is called hyperhidrosis and one area often affected is the under arms.

I’m only 28 and already starting to feel conscious about pre-mature ageing, what treatment would you recommend starting off with?

It depends on which areas you feel are ageing. If you want a wrinkle smoothing procedure then botulinum toxin (BOTOX™) might be an initial treatment for you. There are treatments such as dermal fillers or chemical peels. If you feel very self-conscious about your wrinkles, why not book a consultation with a surgeon and discuss the best options available.
