Why It's Vital to Ensure your Cosmetic Surgeon is Insured

Posted on 27 July 2016
When you’re considering undergoing any type of cosmetic surgery, it’s extremely important to carry out research before attending a consultation. This helps ensure that you have a good understanding of what your chosen procedure involves (N.B., naturally, you’ll be able to get more detailed information from your surgeon during the consultation process), check that the surgeon is fully qualified and trained to carry out the operation, and compile a checklist of questions to go through when you meet your surgeon.

However, what some people fail to confirm is whether their cosmetic surgeon or clinic is fully insured as 54-year-old Debra Dawson found out the hard way when she contracted a life-threatening infection post-surgery.

Ms. Dawson underwent a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) with The Hospital Group eight years ago as having two children had taken its toll on her stomach area. She decided to use a UK-based cosmetic surgery as she believed it would be safer than having the procedure performed abroad.

Unfortunately, Debra contracted a dangerous infection following her tummy tuck that resulted in her having to undergo six emergency operations to remove dying flesh from her abdomen. Necrosis is a potential risk associated with any surgical operation that involves lifting and moving areas of skin or fat. It occurs due to loss of blood circulation and results in death of the skin. One key cause of necrosis is post-surgical infection, which is why it’s so important for hospitals and clinics to adhere to strict hygiene procedures. In Debra’s case, her infection was caused by a contaminated water supply at the hospital where her operation was performed. On top of this, she discovered that her surgeon wasn’t fully insured to work in the UK.

It has taken Debra eight years to get the Hospital Group to agree to compensate her for her horrific experience, which has left her with “horrendous” scarring and a stomach that “looks like the outline of a saggy bottom”.

Thanks to new cosmetic surgery standards recently introduced by the Royal College of Surgeons, all plastic surgeons will be required to provide evidence of their insurance, as well as training, accreditation, clinical skills, and experience to achieve certified surgeon status on the RCS’ website. If you’re concerned that your surgeon might not be adequately insured, you can ask them to show you a copy of their certificate.
